ACCESSORIES

Is there any advantage to screw terminals or blade terminals on a switch?
If the component is a replacement, try to obtain the same type of termination because it makes the job easier. Screw terminals require more time to install than blade terminals, but usually perform better on vehicles due to vibration.

What is the difference between an insulated and a non-insulated switch?
In an insulated switch, the contacts are isolated from the chassis ground or engine block. In a non-insulated switch, the contacts short to the chassis ground or engine block when the switch is activated, essentially providing a ground connection to your load.

My continuous duty solenoid gets hot. Is something wrong?
The control circuit in a continuous duty solenoid is usually energized for long periods of time. Under these conditions, the coil will generate heat and within less than an hour, the solenoid housing will become hot to touch. This is normal. Always make sure that all wiring is properly sized for the load that it is carrying, that the terminals are the correct size and have been securely crimped to the wire, and that the terminals have the proper torque to the solenoid studs.

What is the purpose of a battery isolator?
A battery isolator allows a vehicle to charge more than one battery in a system and designates the second battery for powering auxiliary loads. This keeps the loads from draining the main engine cranking battery.

What gauge wire should be used with electric brakes?
Either 12 or 10 gauge wire should be used.

What type of back-up alarms are available?
Electronic back-up alarms are available from 12-72 VDC with decibel ratings ranging from 87-112 dB. Mechanical bell-style alarms are also available.

How can I lock my truck brakes while working?
The MICO hydraulic brake lock systems are supplemental brake holding devices that lock the vehicle’s foundation brakes.

Do you stock aftermarket parts for snowplows?
We stock common replacement parts, plow guides, and fluid for Meyer and Western snowplows.

What is a working load limit (WLL)?
A working load limit is the maximum mass or force which a product is authorized to support in general service when the pull is applied in-line. Working load limits and break strengths are listed on all tie-down and ratchet strap products.

EMERGENCY VEHICLE LIGHTING FAQ

When referring to strobe lights, to what does the term joules refer?
Joules are a measure of the electrical energy input to a strobe.

How do I choose the replacement bulb for a corner strobe kit?
First, verify the manufacturer of the corner strobe kit. The manufacturer’s product label is usually found on the power supply. Next, choose the bulb color and the type of connector: AMP, WP, or Deutsch. Last, determine the type of mount: push-in style or flange mount.

What is the difference between a strobe light and a rotating light?
A rotating light has a motor, and the bulbs or the reflectors rotate 360 degrees. A strobe light is completely electronic and has a gas-filled tube which flashes light when triggered by an electrical impulse.

What are the different types of mountings available for warning lights?
The two types of mountings for warning lights are portable mount, which means the light can be removed and stored when not in use, and permanent mount. Within these styles, there are several options depending on the warning light used. For single beacon or small light bars, either a flange base or pipe mount can be used in a permanent installation. For larger light bars, special mounting bars or mounting legs may be necessary. For portable mountings, the options include magnet mount or a vacuum/magnet mount, which gives the strongest grip capability. Most portable mounting applications include a cord with a cigarette lighter plug at the end.

What information is needed to order a spotlight?
First, determine the vehicle make, model and year. Then, decide whether it will be installed on the right or left side of the vehicle. Chrome or black spotlight head is available. Finally, choose between post mount and door mount application. Replacement parts are available.

What is the advantage of LED lighting over incandescent lighting?
LED lighting provides greater visibility and low amperage draw. Their lifespan is approximately 100,000 hours. They also have an accelerated light-up response time.

TRUCK AND TRAILER LIGHTING

When do I need a tail light converter for my car or trailer?
A tail light converter is necessary when your tow vehicle has a separate turn-signal from the brake and tail light.

What is the difference between a waterproof light and a submersible light?
Submersible lights use the "bell-jar" concept, which allows a small amount of water inside the housing. The resulting air pressure inside the cavity prevents any additional water from reaching the area where the contacts and sockets are located. Waterproof lights are completely sealed.

TRAILER PARTS

My trailer is pulling to one side. What might be causing this?
If your trailer is pulling to one side, it might be due to a number of different issues:

  1. Over-inflated or under-inflated tires; check tire pressure
  2. Unmatched tires on the same axle
  3. Restricted brake lines or hose
  4. A malfunctioning cylinder assembly
  5. Defective or damaged shoe and lining
  6. Improperly adjusted brakes

What is needed to identify an axle?
First the axle length must be measured. Any two of the following axle length measurements are acceptable:

  1. Tip to tip
  2. Hub face to hub face
  3. Brake flange to brake flange, which is the mounting plate for the brake assembly
The inner and outer bearing numbers are needed.
Verify if the axle is a square or a round beam and provide the tube size.
Determine if it has straight or drop spindles.
Finally, identify if it has leaf springs or a torsion style suspension.

What is the bolt circle measurement?
The bolt circle measurement is the diameter of the circle made by using the center of all the wheel mounting studs as a reference.

The release handle on my trailer coupler does not close easily. What could be the problem?
This condition could be due to one of the following issues:

  1. Incorrect fit of the hitch ball to the coupler.
  2. Improper insertion of the hitch ball into the coupler socket.
  3. A broken spring on the release handle.
  4. Obstruction in the coupler ball socket.

How is a hub or hub drum identified?
The identifying numbers are often stamped on either the face or the back of the hub or hub drum. The inner and outer bearing numbers, the number of bolts and the bolt circle measurement are also important identification information.

What information is needed to order a trailer hitch?
Provide us with the make, model and year of the vehicle on which the hitch will be installed. The gross trailer weight is also helpful in determining the correct hitch for your needs.

How are leaf springs identified?
First, determine if the spring has two eyes (a hole on both ends) or one eye and a slipper (hook). Next, measure the width of the spring. Then, measure the length from the center of both eyes or from the center of one eye to the end of the slipper. Finally, count the number of leafs in the spring.

What is the difference between a retaining ring style swivel jack and a tubular mount swivel jack?
The retaining ring style jacks have a plunger pin assembly on the jack that allows you to pull it out and swivel the jack. The jack cannot be easily removed from the mount because of the retaining ring. Tubular swivel jacks have a tube welded to the jack. A mating tube is welded to the trailer. A pin holds the two tubes together. It is easy to separate the jack from the weld-on tube mount.
